Intro
Only at xDevs.com you can find articles, covering not just one expensive instrument but two in a row. Thanks to support from our members, here we will go thru restoration hurdles of two different Fluke 5700/NAF multifunction calibrators. Hopefully we will see these units, at different locations to be used in our international metrology experiments, transfers and long-term stability evaluation reports. 5700A is a known work horse of any serious calibration laboratory, but very rare sight in personal man’s cave labs due to high cost, even today after many years of obsolecense. Current MSRP for modern Fluke 5730A series even in vanilla option-less package is over $60000 USD. Once you add Wideband option, some Fluke low-thermal cable sets, transit case the price tag will shoot up to over $75000 USD, easily. And metrology-level calibration is not included in that price.
5700A Series II and later 5720A were 1994 refresh of original calibrator design, to improve reliability, noise performance on low mV ranges and stability. 5720A was a current model in production for few decades. Today 5720A is obsoleted and replaced by facelifted 5730A in 2016. However in this article, we will be looking at special military-grade version of Series I 5700A units.
Remember, buying broken or even listed “good” used 5700A below market price and fixing it likely will end up as very bad expensive exercise, when all hidden costs considered and accounted for. Cost of ownership of 5700A unit WITH proper repair, long-term verification and calibrations often easily exceed buying a fully tested and calibrated modern unit from reputable source/distributor. So even if you buy complete calibrator for $10K, you can be easily be rewarded with pile of unstable/non-fixable custom Fluke parts that would need thousands more and hundreds of hours to get even just working properly again, leave alone meeting very strict 5700A level specifications.

Manuals and documentation
Fluke does provide all main manuals, including service information for these older calibrators, right on the product page, without requirement of any registration or access requests, unlike Tektronix or Keysight web-sites. Thumbs up for Fluke, way to host the data on your product page, not hiding behind registration forms, “ask a consultant” or other big-dollar marketing obscurity.

First goes the most important document for repairs/maintenance – 570-page service manual. Credits for hosting it freely going to KO4BB portal. We are lucky to also have schematics, list of parts, assembly drawings of the boards included in it!

In this article we will repair and perform testing of two Fluke 5700A/NAF calibrators. These are purchased from online auction, so it will be interesting to see how much extra funding will it require to bring them back in service.
Unit 1 – 5700NAF complete box
This board came as “complete, but condition unknown”. For safety it’s best to assume that box is 100% bad and every board and module must be carefully inspected, tested and verified before assembly into live tests. This calibrator does come with Wideband output A5/A6 option, to provide 30MHz output at Type-N port.

This board came as “broken, non-working”, likely used as parts donor. For safety it’s best to assume that box is 100% bad and every board and module must be carefully inspected, tested and verified before assembly into live tests.
